Mini grammaire : le futur des verbes réguliers. How to express the future: I will...

1- Endings in the future tense for regular verbs such as parler (to speak), chanter (to sing), courir (to run), finir (to finish), vendre (to sell), prendre (to take)... are:

je ___________ -ai

tu ___________ -as

il/elle/on _____ -a

nous _________ -ons

vous _________ -ez

ils/elles ______ -ont

2- Construction of the future tense:

Verb in the infinitive form + ending.

1er groupe : chanter (to sing) / parler (to speak) / penser (to think) / travailler (to work)...

je chanterai (I will sing)

tu chanteras

il / elle chantera

nous chanterons

vous chanterez

ils / elles chanteront

2ème groupe : finir (to finish) / partir (to leave) / choisir (to choose) / ouvrir (to open)...

je finirai (I will finish)

tu finiras

il / elle finira

nous finirons

vous finirez

ils / elles finiront

3ème groupe : vendre (to sell) / prendre (to take) / rendre (to give back) / surprendre (to surprise)... A little twist here, the -e of the infinitive is dropped before adding the ending:

je vendrai (I will sell)

tu vendras

il / elle vendra

nous vendrons

vous vendrez

ils / elles vendront

As always, there are exceptions and irregular verbs that you'll need to learn separately, such as aller (to go), être (to be), avoir (to have). We will learn them in the next "mini grammaire".

Practice :

1. Je (manger) des glaces.

2. Il (finir) ses études.

3. Nous (vendre) la maison.

4. Vous (prendre) la voiture.

5. Tu (choisir) une nouvelle robe.

6. Elles (travailler) longtemps.

Practice 2 : transform the sentences in the near future to the future tense.

Example : je vais manger une glace => je mangerai une glace

1. tu vas gagner la course.

2. Marie va chanter.

3. Mes parents vont vendre la maison.

4. Nous allons prendre des vacances.

5. Je vais habiter à Paris.

6. Vous allez écrire un roman!
