France is a republic with a semi-presidential political regime.

The president in 2023 is Emmanuel Macron. The first Minister is Elisabeth Borne.

The power is shared between the Executive branch, the legislative branch and the judicial branch.



1- The Executive branch


•It is composed of :

• A President of the Republic elected for 5 years by direct universal suffrage (2 laps)

• A Prime Minister, appointed by the president

• A Council of Ministers. The ministers are appointed by the President of the Republic on the Prime Minister's recommendation.


• It is used to: implement (execute) laws and conduct politics





2- The legislative branch


• It is exercised by Parliament.

• Parliament is made up of:

• the National Assembly (577 representatives) which represents the people

• The Senate (348 senators) which represents local authorities

• It is used to: vote the laws.





L'Assemblée Nationale

• Representatives are elected for 5 years by direct universal suffrage with two rounds.


Le Sénat

• Senators are elected by indirect universal suffrage. The electoral body is made up of large voters, that is to say representatives and senators, regional councilors of the department, general councilors and delegates of the municipal councils. Their vote is compulsory.






3- The Judicial Branch


It is made up of: magistrates (judges)

There are three levels:

First instance courts

Appeal courts

The Court of Cassation


It is used to: enforce the application of the law.
